2017 was a tumultuous year for immigration policy. Since President Trump was sworn into office Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Department of Homeland Security sought more ways to gain power and rip families apart. NIJC was among the advocacy groups that fought back against these sinister plans. “It has been a rough year. A very rough year,” said Ruth Lopez-McCarthy, managing attorney of the fund’s efforts for the justice center. “The amount of vitriol and racism and immigrant bashing — we haven’t seen that before coming from the federal government. It’s become pervasive, and that’s what’s been difficult and different.”
