Investigative reporting done by The Marshall Project and This American Life looks deeper into the shuffling of judges and cases in immigration courts in Laredo, Texas and around the border. Shortly after Donald Trump took office, he signed an executive order sending an influx of judges' to the border. This shuffling of judges caused a backlog of cases in the judges home courts around the country. As the backlog increased, so did the time of those who were sitting in detention to have a fair hearing. NIJC was able to provide the records of 22,000 rescheduled hearings. The shuffling of judges also caused a lot of confusion, making it easier for certain cases to fall through the cracks and delay a proper hearing for those in detention.
