Seasoned Litigator Will Lead Legal Team

The National Immigrant Justice Center (NIJC) announced the appointment of Joshua Karsh as the group’s first legal director.
In this capacity, Karsh will lead NIJC’s legal team as it continues to provide quality legal services and fight policies and executive orders discriminating against immigrants — from the immigration courts to the Supreme Court.

“Josh’s litigation expertise combined with his commitment to human rights will further strengthen NIJC’s ability to hold the government accountable and help ensure noncitizens have access to a fair day in court,” said NIJC Executive Director Mary Meg McCarthy.

Karsh comes to NIJC after almost 30 years in private practice litigating high profile, precedent-setting civil rights and consumer protection cases and developing innovative legal strategies. Prior to joining NIJC, Karsh was a shareholder at Hughes Socol Piers Resnick & Dym, Ltd., where he also was a member of the firm’s Management Committee. Earlier in his career, Karsh clerked for former federal court Judge Hubert L. Will. He is a graduate of the University of Chicago Law School and Yale College.
“I am honored to join NIJC’s outstanding team of lawyers and professionals, and to contribute to NIJC’s nationally recognized work protecting immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers from unconscionable challenges to their dignity and their rights,” Karsh said.

Karsh is an elected member of both the American Law Institute and the College of Labor and Employment Lawyers. He is an Illinois Super Lawyer® and an Illinois Leading Lawyer℠, and until recently, for many years, served on the board of directors of the Chicago Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights.
